چکیده

ISOHE (1) HAS DESCRIBED a color reaction produced by the addition of alcoholic carbazole to uronic acids previously heated in 87% sulfuric acid. The purpose of the present report is to apply a modification of this method to the determination of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid. The concentration of mucin in synovial fluid has been determined by the turbidity of the mucin clot (2) or by the chemical estimation of the nitrogen or glucosamine content of the precipitated mucin (3). Inconstancy of the coprecipitating protein makes a direct estimate of hyaluronic acid unreliable by this method. Hyaluronic acid has been determined directly from the concentration of glucosamine in protein-free filtrates of synovial fluid (4) but has been reported on relatively few patients.

The Hyaluronic Acid of Synovial Fluid in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis *is considered a disease which involves the connective tissue and supporting structures of the body with its primary nidus in the interfibrillar ground substance of these structures (1). The ground substances are thought to be composed of mucopolysaccharide-protein complexes. The nature of two of the polysaccharides is known-chondroitin sulfuric acid and hyaluronic acid. Th...

Determination of the unsaturated disaccharides of hyaluronic acid in equine synovial fluid by high-performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an analytical method to determine the presence of hyaluronic acid derived disaccharides in equine synovial fluid. FINDINGS A high-performance liquid chromatography method for the determination of hyaluronic acid derived unsaturated disaccharides in equine synovial fluid was developed and validated. The method is based on the mea...

Anomalous Behavior of Hyaluronan Crosslinking Due to the Presence of Excess Phospholipids in the Articular Cartilage System of Osteoarthritis

Lubrication of articular cartilage is a complex multiscale phenomenon in synovial joint organ systems. In these systems, synovial fluid properties result from synergistic interactions between a variety of molecular constituent. Two molecular classes in particular are of importance in understanding lubrication mechanisms: hyaluronic acid and phospholipids. The purpose of this study is to evaluat...

Synovial fluid lipids in normal individuals and patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Normal human synovial fluid contains trace amounts of phospholipids and cholesterol. Phospholipid composition is similar to that in serum. Rheumatoid synovial fluid contains increased amounts of phospholipid, cholesterol, and neutral lipids. In most cases the concentration is 40 to 60 per cent of that found in simultaneously collected serum specimens. A direct relationship appears to exist betw...

Some properties of human and other synovial fluids.

The main object of this paper is to report measurements made on a small series of human synovial fluids and on a few sheep and ox fluids. These measurements were made in order to test the two methods suggested by Ogston & Stanier (1953 a) for detecting differences of the specific properties of the hyaluronic acid as it occurs in synovial fluids. These methods, both of which are based on viscosi...
